(Another lesson we learned the hard way.) Dig a hole that is twice the diameter and not quite as deep as the nursery container – the root ball should be just about one inch above the soil level. If the tree sits below the soil level, it can be subject to rot and if it sits too high, the roots can become exposed and dry out.
Most of the avocado’s root system is within 6 inches of the soil surface, so heavy mulching is essential for keeping moisture levels constant. Apply mulch in a 3-foot radius around the trunk, but don’t allow the mulch to contact the trunk since this can encourage fungal growth.
